Happy Birthday, Bruce

Happy 68th Birthday Bruce.

Today we decided to go to Titusville and visit the Drake Well Museum.  What a lovely Museum.   A lot of hard work has gone in to this museum.

People were drilling for salt water to obtain salt to preserve food and they kept getting this pesky oily substance they really did not know what to do with.  Well, eventually it was decided that there were uses for this stuff.  The rest is history.  This museum interprets the birth of the American oil industry.  Edwin Drake  tried many ways to extract the oil in the area.  After obtaining the help of salt well driller, William A. Smith (Uncle Billy) he drilled a successful well and on August 27, 1859.  Thousands of wells were sunk along the Oil Creek area.

We started out in the indoor museum with a short introductory film.  Then on to the many exhibits.

On to explore the grounds.

Touring the inside of the reproduction of the Drake well we were treated to a demonstration of the equipment drilling.  We had a nice Q & A with the docent.

Thousands of wells were drilled in the following years.  Many exhibits display the methods that were used.

Can you believe these wheels?

Well after several hours of touring this museum we were getting hungry.  For Bruce's birthday dinner we went to a local brewery called the Blue Canoe.

Seven beer flight!

We must have been really hungry because we didn't remember to take a picture of our food.  Bruce had Buffalo Pork Belly and I had Perogies & Kielbasa.  We then shared a pimento burger.  Really good food.  The flight was great too.  Turned out to be a really nice day.
