Stepping Back in Time

Thursday, June 6, 2019

Trap empty again this morning, but oddly enough the Treager was on its side, turned at a 45-degree angle and in front of our steps.  Did someone try to steal it?  Very odd.  It is now chained to the rig.

Today we visited Mr. Lincoln's home in Springfield.  He bought this house in 1844 for $1,500.  Three of his children were born there.  One, Eddie died there.  It was remodeled twice.  It currently is as it was in 1860.  There is a four-block historic area surrounding the Lincoln home.  His son, Robert, donated the home to the state of Illinois under the condition that it be well maintained and free to the public to visit.  You start at the visitor's center where you can get your timed ticket.  They had a very nice film about Lincoln when he lived in Springfield from 1837 until going to the White House in 1861.

Richard, our guide.

Mary's

Outhouse.  Two adults and one child.

Lincoln's neighborhood in 1860, now a historic district.

Afterward, we chased some quirky stuff, including another section of Historic Route 66.

Once a carpet Viking turned high school mascot.

Abe Lincoln, Rail-Splitter.  30 feet tall.  When taking this picture, I thought someone was working nearby until I realized the chopping sounds were coming from Abe.

Mahan's Gas Station, 1917.

9.5 cents a gallon.  Can you imagine that?

An original section of Route 66, curbs and all.  Carpenter Park,  Sherman, Illinois.

The end of the road.
Maybe not, looks like more.
Interesting storefront.
