New Salem and Happy Father's Day

Saturday & Sunday, June 15-16, 2019

It rained and stormed all day on Saturday and the toaster quit working.  We did laundry and afterward went shopping for a new toaster.

Sunday was a much nicer day.  We drove about 20 miles northwest to the Lincoln's New Salem State Historic Site. This is a reconstruction of the former village of New Salem, Illinois where Abraham Lincoln lived from 1831 to 1837.  While in his twenties he worked as a boatman, soldier, general store owner, postmaster, surveyor and rail splitter, and was first elected to the Illinois General assembly.  Basically, this is where he tried to figure out what he would do with his life.  New Salem was generally abandoned in 1840 once it was realized that the river would never accommodate steam vessels.  In 1930 the CCC built a historic recreation of New Salem based on its original foundations.

Since it was Father's Day it only seemed right to do one of Bruce's favorite things.  We went to a Brewery in Petersburg.  The Hand of Fate Brewery.  As I have said earlier in our travels, we love to go to breweries.  Each one has some unique thing about it besides usually fine craft beer.  In this case, they played up the story of how the town got its name.

It also was a little different regarding the food operation.  They are only licensed to make and serve beer so Dr. Ugs had the food concession.  You order your beer on one side and your food on the other side.  Plus I love the Dr. Ugs name.  We had fine flatbread pizzas from Dr. Ugs and great flights from Hand of Fate.

This building was once a Dollar General.

All in all a good day.  Went back to the RV to chill and I made strawberry shortcake.
