Civics

Today we experienced Illinois government.  We first went to see the small railway station that Lincoln left from when he went to Washington, DC to begin his presidency in 1861.

Our next stop was the Capitol Building in Springfield.  We have visited other state capitols, but realized we have never visited our own,  Guess who is going to Annapolis this winter?  We had a very nice tour guide.

Springfield has the tallest dome of all fifty state capitols at over 400 feet.

Picture of the dome when the lighting was by gas lights.

After being cleaned.

Wallpaper in the old Supreme Court Room.  Notice the word justice throughout the design.
Next, off to see the Governor's Mansion.  No pictures were allowed.  It was quite elegant.  We had a very passionate docent.  Also very informative.

Quirky for today.

On our way back to the truck, we passed the old Capitol Building just as the flag lowering ceremony was occurring.  Look who we discovered watching the ceremony.
