Get Youe Kicks on Route 66

Friday, June 14, 2019

Started my day discovering I sent a very large credit card payment out into cyberspace.  Discover is trying very hard to find it.  Hope they "discover" what happened to it.

We decided to do a little more exploring on Route 66 today.  Lots of quirky stuff as we traveled south on the Mother Road.  All these towns were in Illinois.

First stop was Virden.

Loved the old vintage lights.

A memorial depicting the Virden Mine Battle of 1893.   Labor dispute ended with 4 hired guards and seven miners killed.  Thirty-five were injured.

There was a thrift shop across the street and we bought a brand new cat carrier for $3.

Next stop was Girard.

Here we stopped at Doc's Soda Fountain and Deck's Pharmacy Museum.  We had a really nice lunch.

Our next town was Nilwood.

Turkey tracks.  No one knows if a farmer's turkey did this or a wild turkey almost 100 years ago.

After we left Nilwood, Carlinville was next.

Marcoupin County "Million Dollar" Courthouse.  Thanks to political and social scandals.

County jail of 1869.
We then drove through the small towns of Gillespie and Benld. After that, we drove to Staunton.  Our first stop was Henry's Ra66it Ranch.  We had such a nice time there.  Richard Henry was so friendly, it was really easy to have a great conversation with him.  I got to hold a very sweet gray bunny.

Talking to Richard Henry.

I am holding Herbert. The picture under that is Gilbert  The one is the middle is a monument to "Cars."  Radiator Springs.  All the cars are VW Rabbits.

Mural in downtown Staunton.

Our last stop was the "Pink Elephant Mall" in Livingston.  Talk about quirky!

Back to the RV with plans to continue our Route 66 exploring another day.
