Corvettes and Sinkholes

A quick bite at the coach and off the the Corvette Museum. Although we had been here 16 years ago, that was before the big sinkhole swallowed up eight corvettes.  Out of the eight cars only three were able to be restored.  The sinkhole has been filled in and the lines painted on the floor outlining where it was and where the cave that caused it is.  Seven of the eight cars are back in place where they were. The eighth is still being restored.  It was well worth a second trip.  Mother Nature is incredible and man capitalizing on it is remarkable.

This is the final car being restored.  The owner lent the car to the museum because he thought it would be safe there.

This must have been quite a site to see these cars recovered.  Some were completely buried in the debris.

Two of the three cars that could be restored.

This is looking down into the cave that caused the sinkhole.

Ended our time here in the 50's type diner with a root beer float.

After our busy morning, our next stop was Lost River Cave.  This is a seven-mile cave system not connected to Mammoth Caves. This is a boat tour through a cave.  We started out with a short walk and heard some history of the area.  The river appears in four locations aptly named Blue Hole #1, 2, 3 and 4. We visited #4.  There were a lot of stories of soldiers and a wagon falling into this hole and never recovered.  Originally it was thought that they were very deep, but it was really an underground river. The river flows through the cave.  It was quite a rustic boat trip.  The water was quite high which added a little excitement to the trip.

 Blue Hole #4.

This cave was a night club at one time. They still hold weddings, proms, and special events still today. In fact, I want my next wedding here.

After our cave boat tour, we did a short nature hike.  We were certainly filling our days.

We stopped at a Walmart for some groceries and a few supplies to improve the coach.  We are always looking for ways to improve storage and efficiency.  The more time we spend in the coach the more we learn how to streamline things.  Baskets just the right size and shape really improves the refrigerator and cabinets.

Also on the way back to the campsite, we stopped to look at the dam overflow.  This was the source of the river behind our site.

Time to relax.  We shared some Barton's 1792 Bourbon, then some brie and wine.  Later for dinner, we made some great pork tacos (left over from the slow cooked pork from earlier.)  We discovered we had a box of Jax on board.

 A great night.
