Charleston is known as one of the most haunted cities in the United States. Since I love to do ghost tours I am in the right place. Bless my husband for being tolerant of my addiction. I scheduled three tours while we are here. Two today and one tomorrow.
We started out just walking around trying to find our way to the various starting points. We cruised the city market.
We had some time to kill before our tour so we googled a close by bar. We found a little gem called Bistro a Vin. Though primarily a wine bar he had some really nice beer. I had a French beer.
Our first tour was of the Haunted City Jail. It was built in 1803 and used until 1939 it is estimated that over 14,000 people lost their lives here. Mostly to the poor conditions and overcrowding.
It is always a challenge to find your way around a new city on foot after dark. Charleston was no different. We left the jail and after a few wrong turns managed to get to starting point number 2.
Just like before we had some time to kill so we stopped in at a bar close to the start of our second tour.
Tour number 2 was Death and Depravity. This was an adults only tour (thank goodness, the first tour had an unruly 10-year-old and three adult women living a second childhood, wearing light up pink ears on a ghost tour.) This one had a bachelorette party of some very drunk young women. Fortunately, they weren't as bad as we thought they might be. We started out at the fountain in Waterfront Park.
Even though I really enjoy these tours I have to admit that most of them are just somewhat amusing. I think the neat part is roaming around an unknown area after hours in the dark. This one was no different. We heard some interesting stories, but the neat part is seeing where things happened and stories you don't hear unless you do something like these tours. I am still waiting to actually be frightened by more than getting lost going back to the car. Still waiting to have a ghostly experience.
