Exploring Lexington

Monday, June 7, 2021

Today we explored the town of Lexington.  We started out at the Visitor's Center where we were given so much good information by a very nice lady.  We began the walking tour of the town and toured the Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson home.  It was supposed to be a self-guided tour with the help of a phone app, but lucky for us the docent wasn't busy and offered to do a guided visit.  He was so informative and had a number of stories that really enhanced the tour.

We continued to do more of the walking tour but it was starting to get hot so we decided to go back to the truck and drive to the cemetery where Jackson was buried.

Street in Lexington, VA.

The first wife of Jackson, who died during childbirth.

On our past explorations, we have visited the house where Jackson died from his Civil War wounds.  Our home campground, Wilderness, is minutes away from Chancellorsville where he was shoot. We have visited the house and grave where his amputated arm was buried.  Now we have visited his grave.

Notice the lemons, it was believed he liked to suck on them.  Maybe a myth.

We then went to the Washington-Lee Campus to see Robert E. Lee's grave but the Chapel was closed.

After returning to camp, we spent a little time in the pool, then visited with our neighbors, Bob and  Guillermo.  Unfortunately, we had to say goodbye as they were moving on.  But maybe we will see them again down the road.
