Big Bridge and Deep in the Earth

 Wednesday, June 9, 2021

Today we went to see the namesake of this area.  The Natural Bridge.  This is a 215-foot limestone natural bridge.  Legend has it the George Washington surveyed the area as a young man.  Thomas Jefferson bought the land in 1774.  It is now a Virginia State Park.  We hiked the Cedar Creek Trail that goes under the arch.  Along the trail is also a Salt Peter Cave, the closed site of a living history area, Monacan Village, the Lost River, and Lace falls.

Lace Falls

Our next stop was Natural Bridge Caverns.  These caverans are the equivilant of 34 stories deep.  There is no elevator so it was a bit of a walk down and back up.  There is electric lights and walkways but this cavern was pretty natural.  Not a lot of commercialization.

Over 400 foot entranceway.

End of original exploration.

Now a little driving around looking for qurikey things.

After all that walking and driving, we decided we needed a beer.  The next stop was the Great Valley Farm Brewey.

Back to the RV to get ready for tomorrow.
