IBEW 125 Years

September 23-24, 2017

This weekend we joined a large number of electricians and their guests to celebrate the 125rh Anniversary of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Washington, D.C. Local 26.   This was held at the MGM National Harbor.  Many of the attending electricians actually worked on this building.

We decided to make a weekend of it and got a room for Saturday night. This place is just beautiful and there is a Casino too. How cool is that.

Started out at the registration desk with Mimosas, Champeign and a beautiful overlook of the lobby decorated for Thanksgiving/Fall.

The event itself was awesome.  It started out with open bars before a opening ceremony.  Our Master of Ceremonies was Rick "Doc" Walker of Redskin fame.  This event was like none we have ever attended.  They were no round tables with a boring dinner while you listened to a bunch of speeches.  Instead things were set up as Cities.  When you registered you received a ticket to whatever city you were going to visit first.  We went to New York.  Other cities were Dallas, New Orleans, Chicago and Miami.  Each city had food associated with that area.  There was also music that the area was known for.  New York had a big band, Dallas, country, New Orleans had dueling pianos, Chicago was Blues and Miami was Salsa. We had Deepdish pizza and cheesecake in New York, Chicago Dogs, Bananas Foster in New Orleans, BBQ in Dallas, Latin fare in Miami just as some examples.

Before entering the opening ceremonies there were character actors all over.  An electrician on stilts, Rosie the Rivetor, President Lincoln, Uncle Sam, Lucy, Austin Powers.  There was different characters all evening.

On Sunday, after a nice breakfast we spent some time in the casino and walking around the property.  What a great weekend.

Wye Mills, MD

Just took a drive to get out of the house for a little while.  Along the way we stopped at the Grist Mill at Wye Mills, MD. This is the oldest continuously operated water powered grist mill in the U.S.  We had such a nice chat with the lady there.  Small town gossip and all.  Bought some whole wheat and also some grits.  Originally wanted to see what was at the site of the old Wye Oak.  This tree was believed to be over 400 years old.   We did see it years ago.  It toppled in a major storm June 6, 2002.  In it's place is a clone that was planted in the remains of the original trunk June 6, 2006.
